NEW YORK, NY – Micah Lasher, candidate for New York State Assembly in the 69th District, today announced that he has received endorsement of the Communications Workers of America Local 1180. CWA Local 1180 began as the Municipal Management Society (MMS) in 1954, and was the first “union” of New York City supervisory and administrative employees. Today, Local 1180 remains one of the largest public sector locals of CWA, representing more than 9,000 active members and 6,200 retirees.
“Micah Lasher is the champion for public sector workers we need in Albany,” said Gloria Middleton, President of CWA 1180. “We are proud to support his campaign for State Assembly because we know he will work tirelessly for fair and decent wages, good benefits, safe working conditions, and stronger communities.”
“New York City could not function without the hard working men and women of CWA Local 1180,” said Micah Lasher. “I am deeply honored to have their support, and look forward to working with them to ensure our essential workers are treated as such.”
Last month Lasher and NYC Comptroller Brad Lander published an op-ed in the Daily News proposing a new program to help municipal workers buy homes in the five boroughs. The plan would make home ownership more affordable, strengthen public sector retention and recruitment, help preserve New York’s middle class, and generate meaningful returns for the City’s pension funds.
The CWA Local 1180 endorsement is part of a growing coalition of organized labor supporting Lasher: the Hotel and Gaming Trades, Teamsters Local 817, the Civil Service Employees Association, the United Federation of Teachers, and New York State United Teachers. They join progressive leaders and organizations known and trusted by the voters of the 69th Assembly District, including Congressmember Jerry Nadler, Congressmember Adriano Espaillat, City Comptroller Brad Lander, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, State Senator Robert Jackson, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, City Councilmember Shaun Abreu, City Councilmember Gale Brewer, former City Comptroller Scott Stringer, and former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger. Lasher has also been endorsed by all three Democratic clubs in the district — Broadway Democrats, Three Parks Independent Democrats, and West Side Democrats — as well as the League of Conservation Voters, the Stonewall Democrats, and Planned Parenthood Empire State Votes.
