NEW YORK, NY – Micah Lasher, candidate for New York State Assembly in the 69th District, today announced that he has received endorsement of both the New York State United Teachers and United Federation of Teachers. The unions collectively represent more than 800,000 people who work in, or are retired from, New York’s schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities.
“As an experienced policymaker and political leader, Micah Lasher knows how to navigate the intricacies of Albany,” said Michael Mulgrew, President of the United Federation of Teachers. “We believe he will be an excellent representative for constituents on Manhattan’s West Side and we wholeheartedly support his candidacy for New York State Assembly in District 69.”
“As a public school parent of elementary school and middle school-aged kids, I see the amazing work being done by our teachers, principals, security guards, paraprofessionals, nurses, counselors, and school staff — each and every day,” said Micah Lasher. “In the Assembly, I will bring the personal experience and commitment that I feel as a proud public school graduate and parent to the mission of supporting our educators in their critical work to help all our children learn and succeed.”
Lasher worked closely with NYSUT and the UFT on a groundbreaking initiative, unveiled in January and enacted last month, to support the use of evidence-based best practices to teach reading in schools throughout New York. He was also part of the team that fully funded public school Foundation Aid in last year’s State budget.
NYSUT and the UFT join a coalition of progressive leaders and organizations known and trusted by the voters of the 69th Assembly District, including Congressmember Jerry Nadler, Congressmember Adriano Espaillat, City Comptroller Brad Lander, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, State Senator Robert Jackson, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, City Councilmember Shaun Abreu, City Councilmember Gale Brewer, former City Comptroller Scott Stringer, and former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger. Lasher has also been endorsed by all three Democratic clubs in the district: Broadway Democrats, Three Parks Independent Democrats, and West Side Democrats. Additionally, he has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, Teamsters Local 817, the Civil Service Employees Association, and the Stonewall Democrats of New York City.
